Laurence Walter Berry was born in England, January 13, 1905. He came to Canada in 1914 with his mother Ethel, nee Tandy, to join his father Albert who had come to Crescent Beach to work in 1912. Dad worked for the Great Northern Railway when they were constructing the line from Seattle to Vancouver. He was a rifle instructor in Camp Borden during World War II. Following the war, he became a commercial fisherman, first crabbing in Boundary Bay, then trolling for salmon off the West coast of Vancouver Island.
